How is a Lip Lift Done?

Lip lifts enhance appearance by shortening the distance between the nose and the upper lip. Dr. Bolitho makes incisions either just below the nose or at the corners of the mouth depending on the type of lift being done. Each procedure involves removal of a small amount of skin and tissue to lift the upper lip and show more of the vermillion (pink) of the lip. The most common lip lift procedures are:

Subnasal bullhorn lip lift:

A small incision following the base of the nose creates a bullhorn shape which pulls the center and sides of the lip upwards.

Corner lip lift:

Small incisions near the corners of the mouth pull both sides up which gives a more “resting smile” appearance.

Benefits of a Lip Lift Vs. Other Methods for Fuller Lips

While lip fillers and overlining with makeup are options for enhancing your lips, a lip lift offers several unique benefits:

  • Natural-looking results: Lip fillers can result in an overdone or unnatural appearance. By lifting the lips and exposing more of the vermillion, you get a youthful, plump look that complements the natural contours of the face.
  • More permanent results: Lip fillers only last a few months while a lip lift can last years.
  • Improved lip shape: A lip lift can improve the shape of the lips with a more defined cupid's bow and an overall enhanced appearance.
  • Minimal scarring: While a lip lift does involve some incisions, the scars are well-hidden and fade.

Lip Augmentation Recovery Time is Fairly Minimal

The procedure typically takes about an hour to complete allowing patients to go home the same day. There may be some swelling and bruising afterwards, but this can be managed with ice packs and over-the-counter pain medications as needed. Activities that may increase blood flow to the lips, such as vigorous exercise or hot showers, should be avoided for at least 24 hours. Most patients can return to their normal activities within a few days.

How Long Does It Last?

The longevity of a lip lift can vary. The duration of the results depends on factors such as the patient's age, skin type, lifestyle, and the technique used during the procedure. Some patients may experience longer-lasting results due to their skin's elasticity and natural healing abilities. Older patients or those with thinner skin may see the effects of the procedure diminish faster than others. Dr. Bolitho will discuss the expected longevity of the procedure to ensure you have realistic expectations and can plan accordingly.
