This patient has the BRCA gene. The harmful mutations in these genes produce a high risk for breast and ovarian cancer in affected families. With the presence of this gene, the risk of breast cancer is about five times the normal risk, and the risk of ovarian cancer is about ten to thirty times the normal risk.
With her grandmother dying from breast cancer at 30-years-old and her mother diagnosed with breast cancer in her late 40's, this patient proactively took her health into her own hands. After having her three children and years of multiple scares and stereotactic biopsies, she endured a preventative double mastectomy and had her ovaries removed.
Wanting to feel and look better, and claim some of her body back, she decided on the abdominoplasty. "After having three kids, my stomach was so stretched out there was no amount of exercise that was going to get rid of it." When having her ovaries removed, she had the abdominoplasty at the same time. "I just wanted to do one thing that would make myself feel better."
"I'm so glad I did it." She's happy with the results despite some temporary discomfort. "It was a lot of work and more painful than I thought it would be." But what made it bearable was Dr. Bolitho. "He was kind. He understood. It could have been a lot harder if you don't have a doctor that is so nice and genuinely cares for his patients."
